Royal Canadian
Army Cadet Corps

INTRODUCTION

2965 RCACC, NSD holds the distinction of being the only corps consisting of deaf cadets in Canada. The corps has proven itself as a youth organization of excellence for the young deaf students of NSD. In addition, it has provided constructive leisure time activities for young people since 1979.

COMMUNITY HISTORY

The Newfoundland School for the Deaf began in 1964 at Pleasantville, St. John's. In 1965, the school was moved to the Torbay Complex in Torbay. 2965 RCACC Newfoundland School for the Deaf was started in 1979 at the school in Torbay. In May, 1987 the New School for the Deaf was opened on Topsail Road, St. John's. The New School for the Deaf offered students at NSD the most up-to-date facility for the deaf available today.

CORPS HISTORY

2965 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps was formed in 1979 at the Newfoundland School for the Deaf (NSD). The officers were Jack Jardine, Cyril Coffin and Bill Jardine. Twenty-seven cadets completed the 1979 training year with cadet Paul Hackett as Cadet Lieutenant. The ACO (Land), Capt. Chris Chance, offered his assistance in helping the corps become a viable operation. In addition, Stokers Group of Rotary, under the direction of Mr. John Murphy, provided both moral and financial support to our group. The entire membership of Stokers Group of Rotary would visit our group on many occasions and watch as we struggled through learning not only the drill of the day but also, developing sign language to transmit the drill movements to the Cadets. A major support during our first year of training was Mr. Charles Harkins, principal of NSD. At the time he saw the need for extracurricular activities for our students and nothing was spared to ensure that our Cadets were offered a variety of experiences.

Since 1979, the corps has received tremendous support from the sponsoring body, Stokers Group of Rotary. This support coupled with the ongoing assistance and co-operation from the administration of the School for the Deaf, has contributed greatly to the success of 2965 NSD. In addition to monetary support from the sponsor, they have continued to maintain contact with our group on a regular basis . Although all members do not now attend our parades, they show a real interest in our development. The support from NSD has continued through the years and our group can look to the administration of the school when resources are needed or when some special consideration is needed for our group.

Through the cadet program, students of NSD have had the opportunity to participate in practical training in the areas of wilderness survival, swimming, winter camping, canoe building, skiing, snow-shoeing, horseback riding and other adventurous activities. They have also learned skills in First Aid, The Duke of Edinburgh Award Program and the Canada Fitness Award Program. Through all of these programs our Cadets have proven themselves to be able learners and on par with the best.

Summer camp experience always plays a major role in the development of the local cadet program. It is through summer camp that cadets experience the true meaning of the overall cadet program. When our cadet corps first started training, it was stated that summer camp would not be an option for our cadets. Little was said at the time and a wait and see attitude was taken. Three years after commencing training, our first Cadets attended camp at Camp Argonaut in New Brunswick. The cadets were :

Michael Best, Wade Moores, Roslyn Chaffey, Cathy Bennett and Cathy Lushman. The accompanying officers were, Lt. Jack Jardine and Lt. Desmond McCarthy. The group proved themselves and 3 of the cadets received shadow ranks for the final inspection.

Since our first experience at cadet camp, we have had cadets attend summer camp at Argonaut in 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1993. In 1993, our first cadets for the 6 week program attended camp. They were, Deanna Emberley, Patricia Jones, Loralee Butt and Donny Crocker.

Over the years, more than two hundred and forty Cadets have reaped the benefits of the cadet program and many have gone on to take their places in leadership capacities elsewhere. In 1988, Thomas Wiseman, a former cadet, became our first deaf Civilian Instructor (CI). Also, in 1988 cadet Doreen Fowler became our first female commanding officer. In 1994, we have our first cadets who are receiving the Duke of Edinburgh awards. They are Joanne Dillon, Patricia Jones, Tammy Morgan, Loralee Butt, Deanna Emberley and Donny Crocker.

Our cadet corps can look to it's past for inspiration as this the 17th year draws to a close. While continuing with the regular program of instruction, we attempt to offer new challenges to our cadets. The challenges over the past several years have included the Duke of Edinburgh Award program, First Aid and increased participation in volunteer activities on the community level. With the continued support from parents, Stokers Group of Rotary, NSD administration, officers and cadets, 2965 will continue to make a major impact upon the students of NSD.

CONCLUDING REMARKS

The cadets of 2965 NSD have experienced many benefits as a result of the Cadet Training Program. This year eight cadets are registered for the Duke of Edinburgh Program. One cadet will be working on the Bronze Level and the remaining seven will be doing the Silver Level. In the Spring. the cadets will complete another First Aid course as well as a basic canoeing course. More weekend outings are planned for the Spring.

2965 NSD RCACC can now look back to its past for inspiration. We are ending our 17th year of operation. With the continued support from the Stokers Group of Rotary, NSD administration officers and Instructors and especially cadets, 2965 RCACC should continue to flourish and grow.
